Randy decided to begin his talk in a specific way--showing his CT scans, introducing "the elephant in the room," assuring everyone he's not in denial, and doing push-ups. What made this effective? What were you thinking watching this for the first time via video?
Below is a link to Randy's "Last Lecture" in its entirety.
This was effective because even at the start or before the lecture, the crowd was wondering and thinking in other places other than his speech, so he did what had to be done he told everyone hands down and also said he was not in denial and showed the audiance that he was still himself.
Answer all parts of the prompt! What were you thinking as you watched this for the first time?
How do you know what the crowd was thinking? Also, what do you mean by "thinking in other places"? You write with such finality and as if you were there. Be careful not to do this.
Read your response out loud to yourself before you submit. Your writing sounds very conversational, and you can eliminate unnecessary words or phrases (the wordiness) by reading your response out loud.
To show that he is not scared to show anyone that he is dying. Not scared of dying but he is scared of leaving his family behind. He wants people to know that you don't have to be scared to show what they have. He also want to show his kids what he was doing and that they can learn from their dad. I was thinking was why show his CT scans to everyone and doing push-up. It's for himself not for everyone to see or what he got.
Errors: *Your first sentence is a fragment. Perhaps state: This was effective because... *I was thinking, "Why show his CT scans to everyone and do push-ups?" *"He also want" should state "He also wants"
What do you mean by "He wants people to know that you don't have to be scared to show what they have"? Explain.
It was kind of a comical relief thing. When he showed were the 10 tumors were I'd imagine the lecture got dark quickly, but then he dropped and started doing push-ups which gave the lecture a comic relief. What I thought the first time I saw the video I was surprised he did that.
Errors: *where *watch your tense *Your last sentence needs re-worded. For example: "The first time I saw the video, I was surprised by how healthy he appeared."
Address what made this effective. For instance, state "This was effective because it was comic relief." Also, explain what you mean by comic relief.
well first to start off i thought it was a very effective thing he did by doing the push-ups because once he showed the ct scan of his cancer. so that everybody now knows he is dying. But after he just kept going on with the speech because he accepted that he was going to die. but the push-ups were just added to show that he wont let the cancer hold him back witch was a good strategy to show everybody.
Errors: *Capitalize the beginning of each sentence *Capitalize I *Comma after cancer instead of a period
Tips: *Avoid stating "Well first to start off" because it is unnecessary and makes your response wordy. You can simply state "I thought". *Read your response out loud before hitting submit.
It was effective because he showed everyone that yes he has cancer but he still is not giving up. i thought he was brave in doing this because he showed everyone there what he was going threw
I think the way he introduced himself and made himself known was very effective. By allowing people to see him in his most vulnerable state is what wins over hearts. Introducing the "Elephant in the room" is a great tactic for Randy because he allows people to know that this is not a joke, he suffers from a disease that is very sad and obviously a shame; but he works through it. He enables himself to do things and not be sad so he shares his stories with others and what greater way to share a story and being an honest man.
i think that Randy is a brave man to get up and tell that he has cancer and is fighting it but the push ups were to show nothing is going to stop him until it over
